- ==[1]====================================================================[1]==
- ==[INTRODUCTION]==============================================================
-
- Welcome to the WARP documentation file. Please read this _before_ star-
- ting the demonstration.
- It contains some useful informations to avoid system crashs and/or un-
- necessary malfunctions.
-
-
- ==[2]====================================================================[2]==
- ==[REQUIREMENTS]==============================================================
-
- The WARP demonstration requires at least a 486 to run at full speed. It
- will run on a 386,though,but it will be rather slow on some parts, then.
- A Gravis Ultrasound Card is needed for music and sound output. Again, it
- will run without this one, but well.. you'll miss something !
- The Gravis needs to be equiped with 1mb of dram memory. Having less mem-
- ory on board results in some sounds and effects of the WARP demo being
- skipped.
- To summarize here's the optimum system requirement:
-
- 486/40+
- Fast VGA (preferably local bus of some kind)
- GUS (1mb for full sound support)
- 587kb (free conventional memory with installed himem.sys)
- 1mb XMS
-
- ==[3]====================================================================[3]==
- ==[COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS]===================================================
-
- There are four built in command line parameters.
-
- WARP /L - Loop the demo (credits and greetings part will be skipped)
- WARP /? - Get the helpscreen (all this is displayed there, too)
- WARP /P# - Where # represents the number of the part, you wish to
- jump to !
-
-
- ==[4]====================================================================[4]==
- ==[CONFIGURING]===============================================================
-
- First of all, in order to run the demo, start with a clean boot. Install
- HIMEM.SYS, nothing else is needed nor used by WARP. So don't include any
- V86 mode manager in your configuratuion.
- The included config program is to be used before you start the demon-
- stration. After you've choosen your configuration, you don't need to run
- it again, unless you change your hardware configuration or delete the
- generated configuration file.
- Configuring the demo is quite easy, just start the CONFIG.EXE, it should
- then be able to detect your hardware by itself. If you encounter pro-
- blems here, please refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING section of this documen-
- tation.
- Having started the configuration, the system will be checked, this can
- take a short while, so don't think it to be crashed.
- The following screen displays a list of detected hardware items.
- ORANGE underline means you may save the config, but not start the demo
- from the config, because the configuration detected will not run with
- WARP. Best example is the detection of a Soundblaster. Please switch to
- NO SOUND, in order to run it properly.
- A RED underline indicates you may neither save nor start with the cur-
- rent configuration. Please reconfigure your items !
- If there's something listed as UNKNOWN, or UNDETECTED, please switch to
- the corresponding field and choose the configuration manually. How to
- alter a specific item is explained in the next chapter.
- The detectionfailure results from yet undetectable cards and or CPUs you
- are using. A known phenomen is the detection of the DX/4 cpu. Just put
- in 486 into the appropriate configuration field, that should do the job.
-
-
- ==[5]====================================================================[5]==
- ==[USING THE CONFIG]==========================================================
-
- Choosing other configurations is done by either using the mouse or key-
- board. Using the mouse is the more comfortable way, not much to explain
- to it, try it out.
- Using the keyboard is a bit more tricky, do the following:
- To choose another config, just press the highlighted key to the corres-
- ponding field. You'll notice a change in the field. To scroll down the
- list press SHIFT <key>.
- Saving, leaving or starting the demo is reached by pressing CTRL A,
- CTRL Q or CTRL T.
- To load a previously saved config, press CTRL L or use the mouse to
- point the button !
-
-
- ==[6]====================================================================[6]==
- ==[TROUBLESHOOTING]===========================================================
-
- Q: The config program reports UNKNOWN in some fields
- A: Switch to the corresponding field and try to find your configuration.
- If it's not included, try something other. It may work nontheless...
-
- Q: I get no sound during the execution of WARP
- A: Do you have enabled the GUS in the config program, does it have 1 mb
- of memory on board? If not, do so. Soundblaster owners, switch to the
- NOSOUND option.
- Note for Soundblaster users: We will not support that card in this
- demo, sorry for that, but we think GUS
- is the only card worth being supported
- at the moment.
-
- Q: What are the SINDBAD EXECUTION FAULTS ?
- A: Sindbad controls the functioning of the WARP demo, so if something is
- wrong or missing he's the one to report it.The easiest way to correct
- the problems : Do what he tells you, for example
- SINDBAD EXECUTION FAULT 001
- CPU ALREADY IN V86 MODE
- Reboot without anything like, QEMM, EMM386, 386MAX ...
-
- Q: The music and sounds do not follow the action on the screen
- A: The demo is timed on most parts of it. Nevertheless it is possible to
- have such effects, especially on slower machines. So, we're really
- sorry for that, but well we did not have enough time to fix that one.
-
-
- ==[7]====================================================================[7]==
- ==[TIPS AND TRICKS]===========================================================
-
- - This demo was NOT coded for optimum performance on 386 machines.
- You'll need a fast 486 machine to porperly enjoy the show.
- - Try to find the hidden part !
- - There are some nice keyboard commands stuffed into the demonstration.
